Its pedimented gable, tall three-stage tower and spire, and clapboard siding are typical of New England Neoclassical churches. The cemetery holds the graves of prominent local citizens and is exceptionally intact.","narrative":"St. John's Episcopal Church is a one-story frame church on Market Street in the village of Cape Vincent, Jefferson County. Built in 1841 for a congregation of 103 communicants from 69 families, it cost $3,100, and the land was donated by Otis P. Starkey. Its design follows the New England meeting house tradition: a three-bay by four-bay main block with a shallow gable roof and pediment, clapboard siding, and a three-story central tower topped by an eight-sided tin-sheathed spire. Inside, the sanctuary keeps its original cove ceiling with a plaster medallion, oak pews, wainscoting and moldings, along with late nineteenth-century stained glass and an oil chandelier. A side wing was remodeled in the 1970s. Behind the church, the parish cemetery holds graves from 1852 onward, including Otis Starkey and General Sacket. The church reflects the conservative taste of the New England-descended settlers and is still used for worship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular religious building in the New England meeting house tradition, with late Federal style plan","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in active use by the Episcopal congregation; condition marked excellent; interior of main block intact, side wing remodeled in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.281369-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002476.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002476/d9c8a914b7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002476/d9c8a914b7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Steven Hamsness","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Johns_Episcopal_Church_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Hamsness</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Johns_Episcopal_Church_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313140","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Cape_Vincent,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588672"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/st-johns-episcopal-church-85002476/"}
