It was built in 1894 after a fire destroyed the earlier hotel on the site.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the hotel is a rare, substantially intact surviving hotel reflecting Cape Vincent's late nineteenth-century commercial prosperity from shipping, industry and tourism. It typifies Broadway's turn-of-the-century appearance and has been in continuous use as a hotel and social center. It is the only surviving hotel in the village.","narrative":"Located at the corner of Broadway and Market Streets in the center of Cape Vincent, this red brick hotel is the town's largest brick commercial building and anchors the western end of the commercial area. Built in 1894, it replaced the Jerome House, which burned in a fire that destroyed it and six other buildings along Broadway. Rebuilding began at once so the new hotel could open for the next season. The building has a three-story, eight-bay main block and a two-story side wing, both with segmental-arched windows and shallow corbelled cornices. Its design is plain, reflecting a role housing workers, sportsmen and travellers. Iron anchors and a second-floor door show that a porch was planned but never built. Inside, the dining room wainscoting, original bar and lighting fixtures survive. A prefabricated metal rear wing was added in the 1950s. The hotel has stayed in continuous use and served as headquarters of the St. Lawrence River Guides Association.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"In continuous use as a hotel; present use is listed as motel and restaurant. Condition is rated fair, and a 1950s metal rear wing does not contribute to its character.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.149647-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002472.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002472/eec2de2ce5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002472/eec2de2ce5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Steven Hamsness","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roxy_Hotel_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Hamsness</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roxy_Hotel_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313270","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxy_Hotel_(Cape_Vincent)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7372460"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/roxy-hotel-85002472/"}
