The 0.8-acre site also holds a garage, two boathouses, a dock, a carriage step and hitching posts.","why_significant":"The house is described as an outstanding example of Italianate residential architecture in Cape Vincent and the best example of the style in the multiple resource area. It keeps a high degree of interior and exterior integrity. Its scale and detail reflect the town's mercantile prosperity and the wealth of its first owner, banker and grain dealer Erastus K. Burnham.","narrative":"Built in 1870 on the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent, this three-story brick house has a three-bay main block, a hipped roof and a central belvedere. Paired brackets support the projecting cornice, and the windows have arched, bracketed hoods. A one-story entry porch with four Italianate columns marks the front, and a rear terrace has a curved limestone wall and balustrade. Inside, the original panelling, doors, hardware and light fixtures survive, along with a stairway with turned spindles and a marble fireplace in the parlor. The house was built for Erastus K. Burnham, a grain dealer, merchant and banker who owned the town's only grain elevator, headed the Bank of Cape Vincent and served as village president. The grounds keep a carriage step with granite hitching posts, plus a garage, two boathouses and a dock from 1919, when the property served as a summer residence. It is considered the best Italianate example in the area and remains a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in use as a residence; condition listed as good, with the original site retained and a cinder-block chimney added on the west wall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.308476-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002456.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002456/6f356e2654-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002456/6f356e2654-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._K._BURNHAM_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313216","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._K._Burnham_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706249"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/burnham-e-k-house-85002456/"}
