It retains its original size, form, siding, decorative details and interior features. It also represents the village's modest residential growth before the railroad.","narrative":"Built around 1845-1850 on Joseph Street at Point Street in Cape Vincent, this one and one-half story frame house is the village's best surviving example of the Gothic Cottage style. Its front has a central gable, vertical board and batten siding, a wide bracketed cornice, and cross-bracing with curved cutouts at the gable peak. The off-center entry carries a distinctive concave roof, and French doors on each wing sit under bracketed canopies with flattened pointed-arch trim. Parapets hide the shed roofs of the side wings. James Buckley and his wife Tryphina bought the land in 1845 from James LeRay. Buckley was probably a manufacturer of shingles, doors and blinds, and both were active in village religious and fraternal life. The house keeps its original form, siding, beamed ceiling and window and door surrounds; only a side entry added in 1947 changed it. Mature trees, shrubs and a Victorian-era bronze dog add to the setting. It remains a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Cottage","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in use as a residence; condition rated fair; eastern entry added in 1947.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.988114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002454.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002454/e81b63e4b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002454/e81b63e4b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Steven Hamsness","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Buckley_House_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Hamsness</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Buckley_House_in_Cape_Vincent_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Buckley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6130448"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/buckley-james-house-85002454/"}
