It holds twenty-six buildings, mostly frame houses built from the 1880s to the 1920s, and one brick commercial building.","why_significant":"The district is one of the few surviving portions of Durham's most fashionable late nineteenth-century neighborhood, which grew from the city's early tobacco wealth. Pioneering families developed it, and leading industrialists, financiers, merchants and professionals built houses there. It contains notable examples of vernacular Queen Anne and classically derived revival styles.","narrative":"Holloway Street District is a tree-shaded residential area east of downtown Durham, made up of twenty-six buildings along Holloway Street and nearby Dillard Street. Nearly all are one- to two-and-one-half-story frame houses from the 1880s to the 1920s, along with one brick commercial building from the late 1910s. Vernacular Queen Anne houses with irregular rooflines, sawn bargeboard and three-sided bays predominate, mixed with Neoclassical and Colonial Revival designs such as the Thomas House with its curved Ionic portico. The district is one of the few surviving parts of Durham's earliest prestigious neighborhood, which grew in the 1860s and 1870s as the tobacco industry brought wealth to the city. Members of pioneering families sold lots to industrialists, bankers, merchants and professionals who built their homes here. Much of the original neighborhood was lost to commercial growth, urban renewal and road projects. Today the remaining houses are largely intact but deteriorated, and many have been converted to apartments.","period_of_significance":"1880s - 1920s","architect_builder":"See individual inventory entries (no single architect or builder named in the portion provided)","architectural_style":"Vernacular Queen Anne, with early Neoclassical Revival and Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Described as largely intact but deteriorated; many houses are divided into apartments, some are owner-occupied, and a few have been vacant and vandalized.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.635313-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7177/47717755/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85002437.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002437/d05d1a9917-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002437/d05d1a9917-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Monumenteer2014camper","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holloway_Street_Historic_District_-_White_wooden_house_with_green_trim_-_Durham,_North_Carolina.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Monumenteer2014camper</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holloway_Street_Historic_District_-_White_wooden_house_with_green_trim_-_Durham,_North_Carolina.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717755","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holloway_Street_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462366"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/durham-county/holloway-street-district-85002437/"}
