It was laid out by settlers from Winchester, Connecticut, on Connecticut models. It is the most intact of several area greens from the same period.","narrative":"Vernon Center Green is a six-acre village green in southwestern Oneida County, New York, laid out in 1798 by settlers from Winchester, Connecticut. They modeled it on Connecticut towns where a central open space held religious, educational and public buildings. The green was meant for the equal use of all Protestant denominations to build churches and schools. Two congregations, Methodist and Presbyterian, built on it and by 1858 had moved to sites facing its north end. Both churches were remodelled in the 1880s, in Romanesque and Gothic styles. From the 1860s the green took on a park-like look with rows of trees, iron benches and, in 1901, an octagonal gazebo. A concession stand and playground were added in the twentieth century. The district includes the green, gazebo, two churches and the Methodist parsonage. Still owned by the Presbyterian church, it is the most intact of several area greens from the period.","period_of_significance":"1798-1901","architect_builder":"Builder/Architect Unknown","architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Romanesque Revival and Gothic (churches); late Victorian park architecture (gazebo)","criteria":[],"status_note":"The green and its two churches remain in use; both churches still serve their original congregations, and the green is still owned by the Vernon Center Presbyterian Church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.812364-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85002431.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320271","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Center_Green_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7922089"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oneida-county/vernon-center-green-historic-district-85002431/"}
