Albert L. Hendrix built it in 1870 around an early nineteenth-century log dwelling.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a vernacular Gothic farmhouse that incorporates an earlier log structure, with a surviving group of outbuildings including a log kitchen. It is also tied to A. L. Hendrix and his son W. A. Hendrix, who were prominent local figures. The site may also hold archaeological resources.","narrative":"Claymont Hill is a farmhouse above the Yadkin River just south of Ronda in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Albert L. Hendrix built it in 1870, enclosing an early nineteenth-century log house that may have belonged to John Martin or his son Isaac. The two-story, center-hall house has a rear ell, two-story porches on three sides, pointed gable vents, and sawnwork trim that give it a Carpenter Gothic character. Ten outbuildings survive, including a small log kitchen thought to predate the house, and a Martin family cemetery lies nearby. Hendrix was a farmer, merchant and Justice of the Peace who had served in the General Assembly. His son W. A. Hendrix bought the farm back in 1909 and served as Ronda postmaster, revenue officer and deputy U.S. marshal. The house was redecorated that year, including grained woodwork. The property was listed for its architecture, for these two men, and for its likely archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Gothic farmhouse with Carpenter Gothic flavor","criteria":["B","C","D"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence and farm, with a well-tended farmstead; condition checked as altered and the owner is described as dedicated to preservation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.013384-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7228/47722845/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85002369.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002369/8c680de1c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002369/8c680de1c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G Keith Hall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Claymont_Hill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G Keith Hall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Claymont_Hill.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722845","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claymont_Hill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708748"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilkes-county/claymont-hill-85002369/"}
