Unlike most such houses, its original plan is intact, with no additions or porch enclosures that changed its configuration.","narrative":"Built in 1884 at 1115 East 3rd Street in Austin, this Victorian house follows a central-hall, L-plan layout under a gabled roof and carries Italianate detailing. Brick piers support the structure. A front porch has turned columns and scrolled brackets, and a wide frieze at the eave is marked by ornate brackets on the main facades and the rear wing. Windows are four-over-four double-hung sash, and the arched double front door has a transom. Pointed, arched hoods trim the doors and windows. Tax records show it was built for John Maddox, a driver with the Texas Express Company. About ten years later O.J. Clements lived there and ran a meat market in a small frame building just northeast of the house. The house was recognized for its architecture. Its original plan survives without additions or porch enclosures, and only minor changes are noted: two removed chimney flues and modifications to the back porch.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian, L-plan with Italianate detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in fair physical condition and still in residential use; described as remarkably intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.392474-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/9703/40970319/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/85002293.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002293/7ac47f52bc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002293/7ac47f52bc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Happywaffle at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_W._Maddox_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Happywaffle at en.wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_W._Maddox_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970319","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002324"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/maddox-john-w-house-85002293/"}
