It covers about 170 acres, roughly half the town, and most buildings date from the 1870s to the 1920s.","why_significant":"The district is significant for community planning and development, transportation, commerce, architecture, landscape architecture and local history. The town was laid out and grew after the railroad arrived in the mid 1870s and served as a cotton marketing and shipping center. Its largely intact Victorian Eclectic houses and brick commercial buildings document small-town life in northeast Georgia up to the 1920s.","narrative":"Maysville is a small railroad town on the Banks and Jackson county line in northeast Georgia, and its historic district takes in about half the town. The district includes the commercial center along East and West Main and Homer Streets, three residential areas, a church, a cemetery and the railroad right-of-way. Most buildings date from the 1870s to the 1920s. Commercial blocks are modest brick buildings with corbeled cornices, arched windows and pressed metal ceilings, and the former Atkins National Bank is the finest. Houses are mostly one-story wood-framed Victorian Eclectic dwellings with prominent porches, along with the brick Greek Revival-influenced Atkins-Sims House of 1855. The town grew after the railroad arrived in the mid 1870s, was incorporated in 1879 and peaked at 805 residents in 1910 as a cotton marketing and shipping center. Growth ended when the cotton economy failed in the 1920s, leaving an almost complete picture of the town as it was then. Informal yards, street trees and the hilltop cemetery add to the historic landscape.","period_of_significance":"1870s - 1920s","architect_builder":"Multiple","architectural_style":"Victorian Eclectic, with a Greek Revival-influenced antebellum house and a few Craftsman-detailed houses","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Described as extremely intact, with few non-contributing properties; condition marked good and altered, with both occupied and unoccupied buildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.616555-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/85002203.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002203/accfb82084-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85002203/accfb82084-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abandoned_Maysville_United_Methodist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abandoned_Maysville_United_Methodist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206899","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maysville_Historic_District_(Maysville,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49523075"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/banks-county/maysville-historic-district-85002203/"}
