It covers the original 1795 town plot of Taylorstown, with 41 tax parcels on 16.9 acres containing 45 buildings.","why_significant":"Taylorstown was laid out in 1795 and has kept its original plan and scale, with an intact fabric of buildings from several periods. The nomination says it is the only one of about ten Washington County town plans laid out before 1800 that has never outgrown its original plan and still retains its nineteenth-century rural village architecture. Its 1880s oil-boom houses and early log and brick buildings add to that significance.","narrative":"Taylorstown is a village of 45 buildings on the west bank of the north branch of Buffalo Creek in Blaine Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1795 when William Taylor had surveyor David Heaton lay out 66 lots, each 60 by 264 feet, along a single street, which later became known as Main Street. The village grew within that plan and kept its original size and scale. Its buildings range from early log houses covered in wood siding and a few brick structures in a vernacular Federal style to Greek Revival and Italianate farmhouses. Many of the houses date from the 1880s, when the discovery of oil near the village brought a brief period of prosperity. The village is regarded as the only one in Washington County laid out before 1800 that has never outgrown its original plan, and it keeps its nineteenth-century rural character. The Taylorstown Post Office, established in 1831, still operates from the rear of the general store.","period_of_significance":"1795-1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, vernacular farm type","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"All buildings are presently occupied and maintained in good condition, per the description; the nomination also notes some alterations and intrusions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:33.327113-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/85001958.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001958/7739312c98-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001958/7739312c98-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Taylorstown_Historic_District_(Taylorstown,_Pennsylvania)_15_Main_St.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Taylorstown_Historic_District_(Taylorstown,_Pennsylvania)_15_Main_St.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998336","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylorstown_Historic_District_(Taylorstown,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7690261"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/washington-county/taylorstown-historic-district-85001958/"}
