Its evolution from about 1825 to its closure as an inn in 1916 records the growth, prosperity and decline of canal trade. Because it was closed as an inn and largely unaltered from 1939 to 1972, many architectural features survived.","narrative":"Beside the canal towpath in the hamlet of Adams Basin, this two-story timber-framed building began about 1825 as a store with living space above. Marcus Adams bought it in 1827 and added a tavern by 1836. Between 1852 and 1857 a four-bay north addition provided a dining room and at least ten guest rooms, including a Greek Revival stair with a turned balustrade. Michael Ryan bought it in 1890 and installed a Queen Anne bar. When Barge Canal construction reached the site in 1910, he moved the house and barn fifty feet north and remodeled the interior, adding yellow pine wainscoted bar, card and loafing rooms. The inn closed in 1916 after animals were banned from the towpath. From 1939 to 1972 one occupant lived in two rooms and nothing was modernized, so interiors survived. Rehabilitation began in 1972. The property is valued as a layered record of canal-era commerce and lodging, with a contributing barn and privy.","period_of_significance":"c.1825-1916","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Federal (original section), with Greek Revival, Queen Anne and early twentieth century elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition, rehabilitated since 1972 for reuse as a small inn for canal recreational users; altered and moved in 1912.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.012321-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85001957.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001957/73f1cc863b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001957/73f1cc863b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ADAMS-RYAN_HOUSE,_MONROE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318752","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adams-Ryan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4680283"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/adams-ryan-house-85001957/"}
