Its buildings, mostly Romanesque Revival, were built after the 1880 fire during the period of the village's commercial peak. It also retains an unusually large number of intact cast-iron storefronts and is an excellent example of a small agricultural community's service center in western New York.","narrative":"Lake Street in the Village of Bergen, Genesee County, holds a compact row of eleven brick commercial buildings dating from 1880 to 1921. Seven are Romanesque Revival structures raised after an 1880 fire destroyed the frame business core, and four reflect early twentieth century vernacular commercial design. Corbelled brick cornices, arched window heads in stone or cast iron, and cast-iron storefronts give the block a uniform look. The Tulley Block, built in 1886, is the most elaborate, with a pedimented parapet, ball-shaped finials and a cast-iron balustrade on a bay window. Other buildings housed a bank, drugstores, a tailor, a grocery, a social hall and a Masonic Temple. Bergen's commercial activity peaked in this period before decline set in during the late 1920s and the Depression. Urban renewal later cleared most of the east side of the street, leaving this west-side block as the only intact remnant of the village's late nineteenth century commercial center.","period_of_significance":"1880-1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival and early twentieth century vernacular Commercial style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good to fair condition with some altered storefronts; several storefronts are boarded up, and the Masonic Temple still serves as a Masonic Lodge.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.212676-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85001953.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001953/57f25ae40a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001953/57f25ae40a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Street_Historic_District,_Bergen,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Street_Historic_District,_Bergen,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317901","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Street_Historic_District_(Bergen,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6477861"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/genesee-county/lake-street-historic-district-85001953/"}
