It is the most intact of several large picturesque residences recalling Hempstead Harbor's change into a fashionable retreat. It was built for attorney George W. Denton, later the first Nassau County attorney, and was a recognized local landmark by 1877.","narrative":"Perched at the top of a winding driveway on a steep, wooded hillside in Flower Hill, this clapboard-sheathed frame house was built around 1873 for George W. Denton, a prosperous local attorney who later became the first Nassau County attorney. It looks out over Hempstead Harbor. Its design is a local interpretation of an Italian villa, with an asymmetrical plan, an engaged tower, semi-octagonal bay windows, round-arched windows, broad bracketed eaves and a wrap-around arcaded verandah. An early twentieth century enlargement of the verandah was removed in the 1970s. Inside, nearly all original finishes survive, including plasterwork, door and window surrounds, and the main staircase. A brick ice house built into the hill behind the house is also part of the property. The house was listed as the most intact of several picturesque residences that mark the harbor's nineteenth-century growth as a fashionable retreat, and as a standout example of its style in Nassau County. A 1877 railroad guide named it among Roslyn's showplaces.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and largely unaltered; occupied as a private residence, in single-family use since the early twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.702006-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85001937.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001937/14aee1bf80-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001937/14aee1bf80-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"LINYperson615","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_George_W._Denton_House,_Inc._Village_of_Flower_Hill,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LINYperson615</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_George_W._Denton_House,_Inc._Village_of_Flower_Hill,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319085","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Denton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5545582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/denton-george-w-house-85001937/"}
