Of the five churches in the nomination, it has the most interesting detailing, including corbelled brickwork, stone trim, a polychrome slate roof, roof cresting, carved woodwork and stained glass. It is also a visual landmark and is virtually unaltered.","narrative":"Standing on a corner lot in a residential area west of Mechanicsburg's commercial district, this brick church was built in 1890 for a Methodist Protestant congregation. That group formed in the early 1850s after the Methodist Episcopal congregation split over slavery. Its earlier church of 1853 was demolished to make way for this building. The congregation later reunited with the United Methodist Church, and the building was sold to the Mechanicsburg Baptist Church. It rises one story over a stone foundation, with a slate gable roof and a corner bell tower. Its details include corbelled brickwork, stone trim, ornamental roof cresting, carved woodwork, stained glass and pointed arch windows drawn from the Gothic Revival. The nomination calls it one of the finest and least altered buildings in the village, with the best decorative brickwork in the community and a prominent place as a neighborhood landmark. Architect and builder are not known.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival influences; late 19th century eclecticism","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Exterior in good condition, interior unknown; still used as a church and described as virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.414002-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85001888.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001888/3f179c67ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001888/3f179c67ee-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mechanicsburg_Baptist_Church_from_the_south.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mechanicsburg_Baptist_Church_from_the_south.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984524","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanicsburg_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6804608"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/champaign-county/mechanicsburg-baptist-church-85001888/"}
