It sits on a stone foundation under a hip roof.","why_significant":"It was the residence of William Culbertson, a leading Mechanicsburg manufacturer who ran the Culbertson & Barr Co., makers of carriages and wagons. Along with the Cyrus Barr residence, it is one of the only surviving buildings tied to that business. It is also considered one of the best surviving examples of Italianate residential architecture in the village.","narrative":"Built around 1870 at the corner of Race and Locust streets in Mechanicsburg, this two-story brick house is a well-preserved example of Italianate residential design. It rests on a stone foundation beneath a hip roof and has an irregular plan with a projecting bay on the east side. Decorative hoodmoulds top the windows, a bracketed cornice runs along the roofline, and a decorative porch spans the front. A minor rear addition is hidden from the street. The house was the home of William Culbertson, who moved to Mechanicsburg in 1854 and founded Culbertson & Murrey, a buggy and carriage maker. He later joined Cyrus Barr to form Culbertson & Barr Co., which operated in the last quarter of the 19th century. His sons later sold Ford, Hudson and Jeffrey cars as Culbertson Brothers. The factory and showroom were lost to fire, leaving this house and the Barr house as the remaining buildings tied to the business.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Exterior in good condition; in use as a residence, with a minor rear addition not visible from the street.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.397104-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85001880.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001880/b5009b25fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001880/b5009b25fa-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Culbertson_House,_Mechanicsburg,_blue_sky.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Culbertson_House,_Mechanicsburg,_blue_sky.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984542","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Culbertson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8007352"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/champaign-county/culbertson-william-house-85001880/"}
