It follows part of the 1828 right of way of the National Road and was brick-paved in 1918.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the road served as an original National Road alignment and was rebuilt in 1918 as a World War I emergency truck route for the Federal government. Its 1918 brick paving, built with convict labor, survives with more intact length than other wartime sections in the township. A rare brick curb on a steep, sharp curve adds to its engineering interest.","narrative":"Peacock Road is a short stretch of brick-paved township road in Center Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, running about six-tenths of a mile near U.S. Route 40 between Cambridge and Old Washington. It follows part of the 1828 National Road right of way and keeps the hilly, curving character of the original route. In March 1918, federal and state officials called for the immediate paving of the unimproved stretch so trucks carrying war supplies could move east. Work began with fifty prison inmates from the Mansfield Reformatory, ninety horses and local stone from a nearby quarry. The brick was laid over a stone base with sand and mastic. A steep curve includes an unusual brick curb, and a 1925-style cable and plank guardrail remains. Asphalt added later has largely worn away. Compared with other wartime sections in the township, this one retains the most intact length of 1918 paving.","period_of_significance":"1918","architect_builder":"Harness Rennick, contractor (1918 reconstruction using Mansfield Reformatory convict labor)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as an access road for two farm homesteads and a township house; brick is worn, partly covered by crumbling asphalt, with one sunken section repaired with gravel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.590206-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85001842.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001842/d3cd29fe30-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001842/d3cd29fe30-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:National_Road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:National_Road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988804","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Road_(Cambridge,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6978121"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/guernsey-county/national-road-85001842/"}
