Buildings date mainly from the 1890s to the 1930s.","why_significant":"The district holds the only remaining collection in Atlanta of early 20th-century warehouses documenting the city's railroad-related commercial history. Its street pattern, building design and land uses were shaped by the adjacent rail line, one of Atlanta's three original lines. It also contains a representative group of modest late 19th- and early 20th-century commercial buildings, a type once common in the city but now increasingly rare.","narrative":"Castleberry Hill is a dense commercial and warehouse district on the southwestern edge of downtown Atlanta, hemmed in by railroad tracks on one side and Peters, Walker and Nelson Streets on the others. About 108 brick buildings, mostly one to three stories, occupy roughly 40 acres. Peters Street holds retail buildings from the 1890s to the 1930s with corbeled cornices and arched windows, along with an 1880s freight depot and a stone-fronted bank of 1900. Nelson and Walker Streets are lined with warehouses, mostly from the 1920s, built after a rail spur arrived between 1912 and 1915. The area changed from a largely residential neighborhood to a commercial and industrial one by about 1930. It was listed because it preserves Atlanta's most intact group of early 20th-century warehouses, shows how the railroad shaped streets and buildings, and retains modest commercial architecture that has become scarce in the city.","period_of_significance":"1890-1935","architect_builder":"Multiple","architectural_style":"Late Victorian and Early 20th Century Commercial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is marked as deteriorated, altered and good; present uses include commercial, private residence and transportation, with some work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.416437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/85001742.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001742/713c9a614e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001742/713c9a614e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"BurnAway","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Castleberry_Hill_welcome_sign.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">BurnAway</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Castleberry_Hill_welcome_sign.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208124","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castleberry_Hill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5050460"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/castleberry-hill-historic-district-85001742/"}
