It is believed to have been built in the 1850s for George V. Credle.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the most outstanding nineteenth-century house in Swan Quarter Township, notable for its architectural detail, size and remarkable state of preservation. It is one of the few thoroughly Greek Revival houses in Hyde County. It is also tied to the Credle family, local farmers and merchants, and to the earlier Blount and Grimes landholding families.","narrative":"Set back from US 264 on flat Hyde County land near Rose Bay, this two-story Greek Revival house once anchored a large plantation. It has fluted porch columns, molded corner boards, a low gable roof with box cornices and returns, and a divided center-hall plan with twelve-foot ceilings. Inside, the original plaster, grained oak doors, mantels and upstairs closets survive, and only the front porch was altered, in the early twentieth century. George V. Credle, a farmer and merchant, bought the 1,798-acre tract in 1855 and probably built the house soon after. Earlier owners included the Grimes family, descendants of John Gray Blount. The house stayed in Credle hands through four generations. A small family cemetery behind it holds George V. Credle, his wife and descendants. The house is regarded as the finest nineteenth-century dwelling in the township and is now vacant and weathered, though sound in structure.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"The house is described as vacant for several years, unpainted, with several broken windows. It is structurally stable but neglected. The cemetery remains well-tended.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.909447-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/98/7208/47720898/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85001670.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001670/033bd84d0f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001670/033bd84d0f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_V._Credle_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_V._Credle_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_V._Credle_House_and_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18749711"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/hyde-county/credle-george-v-house-and-cemetery-85001670/"}
