A carriage house stands on the same lot.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding, well-preserved example of the Second Empire style and representative of the richly ornamented houses of Lynn's nineteenth-century shoe manufacturers. It is also associated with Lucian Newhall, a leader in Lynn's shoe industry. The architect is unknown, but its quality and similarity to nearby work raise the possibility of design by or influence from Gridley J.F. Bryant.","narrative":"Set at the corner of Ocean and Nahant Streets in Lynn, this wood-frame house was built around 1865-1867 for shoe manufacturer Lucian Newhall. It rises two full stories above a granite ashlar basement, with a third storey under a bellcast mansard roof of fish-scale slate, gambrel dormers with arched windows, and a mansard-roofed cupola. Rusticated siding, quoins, dentil cornices, brackets, a porte-cochere and ornate window frames add to the detail. A two-storey carriage house stands at the rear corner of the lot. Newhall, a Quaker-descended manufacturer, entered the family shoe business, started his own firm in 1847, and was among the first to build a factory in what is now Lynn's Central Business District. His widow lived in the house until 1931, after which a physician and his sculptor wife used it as home and office. The architect is unknown, though Boston architect Gridley J.F. Bryant may have influenced the design. The house is valued as a well-preserved Second Empire landmark of Lynn's Diamond District.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1865-1867","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the form says it was recently divided into residential apartments. Alterations have been minor and the carriage house survives.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.261747-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/98/7948/63794898/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85001576.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001576/55f3a55150-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001576/55f3a55150-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lucian_Newhall_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lucian_Newhall_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"96001040","name":"Diamond Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/diamond-historic-district-96001040/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucian_Newhall_House_(Lynn,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6696717"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/newhall-lucian-house-85001576/"}
