The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is an excellent local example of the Federal style, distinguished by its brick end walls. It is also associated with Taunton's 19th century development, because it served as the Old Colony and Newport Railroad depot from 1866 until a station was built in 1876.","narrative":"Built around 1800 at 117 Arlington Street in Taunton, this two-story Federal style house has a symmetrical five-bay facade with a center entry. A low hip roof with a modillion cornice caps the building, and chimneys rise at the end walls. The front and rear are clad in shingle, while the brick end walls have belt courses and segmental window openings, details that suggest a date no later than 1800. Windows with simple surrounds keep their original six-over-six sash. A shed roof hood over the entry was added around 1870. In 1866 the house was sold to the Old Colony and Newport Railroad and served as a depot until a purpose-built station opened in 1876. That railroad use ties it to Taunton's nineteenth century growth, and together with its well-preserved Federal design and brick-ended form, it supports its recognition as a local landmark.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as retaining integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship; the form lists its present use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.81242-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7897/63789791/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85001529.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001529/5e60294b1a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001529/5e60294b1a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Woodward_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Woodward_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789791","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Woodward_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8020558"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/woodward-william-house-85001529/"}
