Lee O'Daniel.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be an exceptional case of a heavily altered Queen Anne residence worth preserving. It was the home of Wilbert Lee 'Pappy' O'Daniel for most of his political career, including his time as governor of Texas (1938-1941) and U.S. Senator (1941-1948). It was also his home during his radio fame with the Light Crust Doughboys, and his first gubernatorial campaign was run from its front room.","narrative":"Built in 1901 on a hilltop south of Fort Worth, this house began as an ambitious Queen Anne farmhouse with towers, gables and verandas, erected for farmer and merchant William Joseph Rogers. In 1925 Wilbert Lee 'Pappy' O'Daniel bought it and had it remodeled. The towers were squared off, the porches removed, an unfinished third story was replaced with a tile roof, and the whole house was faced in brick, giving it its present American Foursquare look. O'Daniel owned the home until 1945. During those years he rose from flour salesman to radio host with the Light Crust Doughboys, then to governor of Texas (1938-1941) and U.S. Senator (1941-1948). His band rehearsed in the front room, and his first campaign headquarters was set up there. The interior retains sand-textured plaster, pine woodwork, pocket doors, a tiled parlor fireplace and leaded-glass cabinets. The house remains a private residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific dates 1904/1925)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne (as first built); American Foursquare (1925 remodeling)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used solely as a residence and stated to be in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.920635-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/9735/40973560/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/85001484.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001484/d87bf546e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001484/d87bf546e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RogersODanielHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RogersODanielHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973560","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002299"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/tarrant-county/rogers-odaniel-house-85001484/"}
