The house is also presented as a vernacular example of transitional Federal and Greek Revival domestic architecture, as these styles developed locally in the first half of the nineteenth century.","narrative":"Whitehead-Fogleman Farm is a rural property in northwestern Chatham County, North Carolina, centered on a two-story frame house built in the late 1830s by local farmer, builder and miller Arthur Whitehead. The house has a hall-and-parlor plan, a full-width shed-roof porch on tapered posts, six-over-six windows and louvered shutters. Inside, wide hand-planed wall boards, a reeded Federal mantel with a paneled overmantel and an enclosed stair show a blend of Federal and Greek Revival detail. A rear shed addition was probably added in the 1840s or 1850s as the family grew. Log, board-and-batten and weatherboard outbuildings include a crib, well house, barn and kitchen. Whitehead acquired land along Mud Lick Creek and Rocky River, bought a mill in 1856 and farmed until his death in 1877. His daughter Elizabeth Fogleman and her husband later occupied the farm. It was recognized for its link to antebellum farming in the county and for its vernacular architecture.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Arthur Whitehead","architectural_style":"Transitional Federal and Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition, and used as a private residence; the form notes a large V-notch log barn that is decaying.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.448825-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7174/47717473/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85001462.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717473","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitehead-Fogleman_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18159271"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/whitehead-fogleman-farm-85001462/"}
