It is tied to Dr. E. H. Ward, an early physician in eastern Chatham County who combined medicine with farming. The house and outbuildings also show vernacular building traditions of rural central North Carolina.","narrative":"Set on a small knoll off SR 1700 near Bynum, this Chatham County farmstead grew around a log cabin that Dr. E. H. Ward, a country physician, moved to the site about 1850. Ward added a weatherboard front section around 1870, covering the older log portion with matching siding, and a board-and-batten rear ell followed about 1900. Outbuildings include a one-room doctor's office, a carriage house, a barn, log cribs, a smokehouse with a log pen, and a brick well house. Ward practiced medicine and farmed, and by his death in 1896 his holdings had grown to 344 acres. The property was nominated as a representative small central North Carolina farmstead of the nineteenth century, as a place associated with an early local physician, and as an example of vernacular building techniques, such as iron spikes set into porch post bases to slow rot. Descendants of Ward continued to occupy the house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Described as occupied private residence and agricultural property; the grounds around the main house are overgrown.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.21016-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/7174/47717495/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85001461.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001461/eb536cf0f5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001461/eb536cf0f5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"bandit6d","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr-_E-_H-_Ward_Farm_2012-09-27_07-56-30.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">bandit6d</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr-_E-_H-_Ward_Farm_2012-09-27_07-56-30.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717495","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._E._H._Ward_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18159128"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/ward-dr-e-h-farm-85001461/"}
