The builder is unknown.","why_significant":"Its main significance is its connection to the Carter family, as a cornerstone in the lives of A. P., Sara and Maybelle Carter, who worshipped there and recorded many hymns. It is also a little altered example of the simple rectangular vernacular church plan common in rural Virginia. It serves as one of the few public focal points for the small community.","narrative":"Mt. Vernon Methodist Church is a small frame country church dating to the 1890s, set on a steep knoll in Poor Valley near Maces Spring in Scott County, Virginia. Its plan is a plain rectangular block with a double-door entrance in the east gable end, three bays along each side, a projecting hexagonal chancel at the west end and a square wooden steeple as its only exterior decoration. Modern siding has replaced the original weatherboarding, but the standing seam metal roof survives, as do the plastered walls, original wood flooring and molded trim with bulls-eye corner blocks inside. A basement added in the mid-twentieth century holds Sunday School rooms. The church matters chiefly for its link to the Carter family. A. P. Carter sang in the choir as a boy, Sara and Maybelle attended after marriage, and many of the family's recordings were hymns. The cemetery holds the graves of A. P. Carter and Sara Carter Bayes. The church also represents rural Virginia's vernacular church tradition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and still in use as a church; altered, with modern siding, lowered ceilings and a mid-twentieth-century basement.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.754-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6789/41678950/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85001413.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001413/dc3ccb5ebf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001413/dc3ccb5ebf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Swampyank","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Vernon_United_Methodist_Church_at_Maces_Springs,_Virginia_now_Hiltons,_Virginia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Swampyank</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Vernon_United_Methodist_Church_at_Maces_Springs,_Virginia_now_Hiltons,_Virginia.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678950","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mt._Vernon_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15260153"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/scott-county/mt-vernon-methodist-church-85001413/"}
