Wallace House and Barn, built about 1850, beside a 63-foot waterfall on Brandywine Creek, with mill ruins, foundations and bridges.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house and barn are significant under criterion B for their association with the Wallace family, whose land speculation, farming and mills increased the population and economy of the Cuyahoga River Valley. The Brandywine mills were among the earliest industrial developments in the valley. The house's smooth ashlar foundation blocks and stone store porch are also described as handsomely crafted and believed unique in the Valley.","narrative":"Overlooking a 63-foot waterfall on Brandywine Creek in Northfield Center, this 45.5-acre farmstead centers on the James W. Wallace House and Barn, both built about 1850. The wood-frame Greek Revival house has clapboard siding, a sandstone foundation of large coursed blocks and a rare stone store porch. Part of it is thought to incorporate the earlier George Wallace house and store, moved about 1850. The small hand-hewn oak barn stands nearby, along with foundations, mill ruins and two bridges. The property matters for the Wallace family, who were land speculators, farmers and mill owners. George Wallace built a sawmill at the falls by 1814, and later a grist mill, woolen factory and distillery, which gave rise to the village of Brandywine. His son James W. Wallace ran an 830-acre farm there. The mills, among the earliest industrial sites in the Cuyahoga Valley, helped increase the valley's population and economy until the 1870s.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Marked occupied; the nominated land lies within Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area and was acquired by the National Park Service in 1982.
