The main house was built about 1849-51 for Douglas Gray by his father, Robert Gray.","why_significant":"The nomination presents Inglewood as one of the finest double-pile Georgian farmhouses in Rockingham County and a fine example of a mid- to late 19th-century farm complex. It is tied to leading county families and reflects the prosperous agricultural society of the mid-Shenandoah Valley. Its hilltop setting also preserves a historic and scenic backdrop for the north side of Harrisonburg.","narrative":"Inglewood is a brick farmhouse on a hilltop overlooking Harrisonburg and the Blue Ridge, in Rockingham County, Virginia. Robert Gray, a Harrisonburg lawyer and farmer who bought the land in 1818, had the double-pile Georgian house built between 1849 and 1851 for his son Douglas. The five-bay Flemish-bond front has a Greek Revival portico, and the interior blends late Federal and Greek Revival woodwork. A later brick extension adds a single room on each floor. Later owners included Gen. John E. Roller, a state senator and founder of the Augusta Military Academy, who lived there until 1932. Restoration in the late 1940s added regional mantels brought from a Harrisonburg house. Outbuildings include a creamery, a stone well, a remodeled cabin once used as a schoolhouse, and early 20th-century barns. The house and farm illustrate the prosperous agricultural society of the mid-Shenandoah Valley, and the preserved grounds keep a scenic setting on the city's north side.","period_of_significance":"1849-51","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian (double-pile farmhouse) with Greek Revival and late Federal detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence, with agricultural use; restored in the late 1940s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.020877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/6834/41683452/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85001172.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001172/4cf8e6d064-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001172/4cf8e6d064-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inglewood_from_Kratzler_Road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inglewood_from_Kratzler_Road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683452","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inglewood_(Harrisonburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15228680"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockingham-county/inglewood-85001172/"}
