It is one of two heavily decorated small houses in the neighborhood. Its detailing reflects mid-19th century styles: the gable trusses are punched and decorated, and the porch rail and brackets are Gothic in feeling, while the window surrounds are Italianate. The architect is unknown. The house has no outbuildings, has not been moved, and has had no major alterations. It is still used as a residence. Crescent Hill was first developed in the 1870s by the Mechanics Cooperative Association, which offered favorable terms to encourage people of modest means to buy homesites. A neighborhood improvement association later grew out of that cooperative interest. The house was recognized for its architectural character and for retaining integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate with Victorian Gothic elements","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.717829-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7910/63791054/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85001048.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001048/7d7a035ad4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001048/7d7a035ad4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMA_ThomasSwadkinsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMA_ThomasSwadkinsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791054","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Swadkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7794290"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/swadkins-thomas-house-85001048/"}
