Its distinctiveness comes from Art Nouveau-influenced gable carving, a conical-roofed corner tower and an original arched verandah. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship, feeling, materials and association.","narrative":"Built about 1890 at 187 Pleasant Street in Arlington, this Queen Anne house sits on a large corner lot with its original circular driveway. Charles Bacon, president of Felt Mills in Winchester, owned the land and had the house built for his daughter, Mrs. Edward Hall. She sold it to Albert Walcott in 1912. A fire in 1893 destroyed the interior, but the elaborate exterior survived untouched. The plan is a simple rectangle, yet projecting gables, a conically roofed circular tower and an arched verandah give it a rambling, picturesque profile. The main gable carries medium-relief carving of swirling vegetation with Art Nouveau influence, topped by a cartouche. The verandah has turned posts with large spheres at midpoint and an original spindle balustrade. Tapered chimneys and half-timber decoration on the gable ends add further detail. It was listed as a well-preserved, well-detailed example of Queen Anne architecture in Arlington.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the exterior is described as essentially unaltered, with the 1/1 sash windows probably replacements, and the lot is well maintained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.748663-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7911/63791146/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85001033.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001033/9ba78f584a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001033/9ba78f584a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Hall_House,_ArlingtonMA_-_IMG_2749.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Hall_House,_ArlingtonMA_-_IMG_2749.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791146","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Hall_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5343277"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hall-edward-house-85001033/"}
