The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact representative of the Italianate style, remodeled around 1875 from a Greek Revival building. It keeps integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. Its original wrought-iron fence and granite retaining wall are well preserved.","narrative":"Standing at 275 Broadway in Arlington, this five-bay, central-entry house was built around 1850 in the Greek Revival style. Its broad, unadorned cornice band, two chimneys behind the ridge and pair of original dormers sit on a low-pitched roof. Around 1875 the house was remodeled in the Italianate style, gaining a double entry with a small, elaborately detailed bracketed hood and side wings. A wrought-iron fence and granite retaining wall from the same period survive in good condition. Local tradition credited the house to Rev. David Damon, minister of First Parish Church, but architectural evidence suggests it was built just after his death in 1843. His descendants owned the property until the 1940s. A large orchard behind the house gave way to a wartime Victory Garden and later to two brick apartment blocks, now regarded as intrusions. The house is valued as an intact Italianate example that retains its historic character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Italianate additions","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; two modern brick apartment blocks built around 1950 stand behind the house and are considered intrusions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.876137-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7909/63790954/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85001030.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001030/89c4d0708e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85001030/89c4d0708e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"own work","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMA_DamonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">own work</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArlingtonMA_DamonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790954","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damon_House_(Arlington,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5212837"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/damon-house-85001030/"}
