Auburn Street, Watertown, Massachusetts, built about 1863 on a corner lot with Palfrey Street.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it Watertown's best example of high-style Italianate residential architecture. It is also tied to Miles Pratt, a local stove manufacturer and civic leader, and to the development of Mt. Auburn Street as a fashionable residential street. The site also has potential prehistoric and historic archeological value.","narrative":"Built about 1863 at the corner of Mt. Auburn and Palfrey Streets in Watertown, this wood-frame house is described as the town's finest high-style Italianate residence. Its main block is three bays wide and two and a half stories tall, with a large rear wing, shiplap siding meant to simulate stone, paired eave brackets, and a scalloped entry canopy that supports a small balcony. A loggia, bay windows, an oriel and a carriage house complete the property. Miles Pratt, born in 1825, moved here around 1863. He founded the Pratt Company, a stove manufacturer that made cannonballs and shells for the Watertown Arsenal during the Civil War, and he helped found the Watertown Free Public Library. His daughter and son-in-law later lived here, and they co-wrote a local history. The house passed to the First Parish Church in 1978. A preservation restriction was placed on it in 1982, the first of its kind on a Watertown residence. It now serves as offices.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated for use as offices; condition listed as excellent; carries a preservation restriction on significant exterior features of the house and carriage house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.761519-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/7955/63795586/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85000980.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000980/2ad25d8612-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000980/2ad25d8612-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miles_Pratt_House,_Watertown_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miles_Pratt_House,_Watertown_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795586","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Pratt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6851514"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/pratt-miles-house-85000980/"}
