It existed by 1826 and operated as a roadside boarding house or inn. The builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance in architecture, commerce and transportation. It is a good example of Plantation Plain style used for an inn or stagecoach stop, and it kept its original Federal mantels, wide-plank wainscoting, shed porch and end chimneys. It served as a boarding house on a major early 19th-century Georgia road and later housed the Sweetwater post office.","narrative":"Sweetwater Inn is a two-story, frame, beaded-weatherboard house near Thomson, Georgia, built in the Plantation Plain style. It has a central hall with one room on each side of both floors, end chimneys, a one-story porch, and locally crafted Federal-style mantels. Although it looks like an ordinary dwelling, it was advertised in 1826 as a comfortable two-story house suited for a boarding house, part of a mill tract with a sawmill, gristmill and cotton gin. The road in front served as a stagecoach route linking Augusta with Milledgeville and Madison. A Sweetwater post office opened in December 1826. Over time the building passed through many owners, including three Baptist ministers, and later became a farm residence for those running the mills and farm. It is the only surviving structure of the former mill settlement, and its rural setting remains largely unchanged. The nomination also notes the original builder is unknown and that the building is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"Before 1826","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Plantation Plain","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and unoccupied at the time of the nomination; the form describes the condition as good but altered, with later rooms and brick steps recently removed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.102845-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/85000938.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208920","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetwater_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17027103"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/mcduffie-county/sweetwater-inn-85000938/"}
