It was probably built about 1825 by Bryan Lavender.","why_significant":"The house has an enclosed-end, two-tier Charleston-type porch with an exterior stair, which is the only access to the second story. This porch form is seldom seen in North Carolina outside New Bern and shows a building type moving from Atlantic port cities inland along rivers. It is also associated with Roscoe Barrus, a local merchant and pharmaceutical dealer who lived there from 1835 to 1870.","narrative":"Built about 1825 beside the Trent River in Pollocksville, this two-story frame house follows a hall and parlor plan and has a gable roof parallel to the road. Its main feature is a two-tier porch across the front, with one end enclosed to shelter an exterior stair that is the only way to reach the upstairs bedrooms. The porch was reworked in the early 1970s but keeps its original form and many original materials. Porches of this type, called Charleston porches, were common in New Bern, and only a few other examples are known in North Carolina. The house shows how the form traveled from Charleston to New Bern and then upstream to Pollocksville. It is also known as the Roscoe Barrus House. Barrus lived there from 1835 to 1870 and ran a drug and pharmaceutical business with stores in Baltimore and New York until the Civil War destroyed his trade and wealth. Bryan Lavender, the likely builder, lost the property to creditors.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Unknown (built c. 1825, apparently by Bryan Lavender)","architectural_style":"Federal style, hall and parlor plan with Charleston-type double-tier porch","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as good and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.195731-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7210/47721024/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85000904.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000904/84463ead8d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000904/84463ead8d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bryan_Lavender_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bryan_Lavender_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721024","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Lavender_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460712"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/jones-county/lavender-bryan-house-85000904/"}
