It is the only building left in Hinesville that documents the town's early settlement period after 1837. It is also tied to Civil War events during Sherman's March to the Sea and to the locally prominent Fraser family, and its grounds hold 19th-century plantings.","narrative":"Built in 1839 and 1840 for Mary Jane Hazzard Bacon, widow of Major John Bacon of Riceboro, this two-story weatherboarded house sits on the edge of Hinesville, Georgia. Hinesville had been laid out in 1837 to replace Riceboro as the Liberty County seat, and this is the only building left in town from that early settlement period. The five-bay house follows the Plantation Plain form, with nine-over-nine windows, louvered shutters, a shed-roofed porch with turned columns, and a raised foundation on Savannah grey brick piers. Inside, a central hall plan has hand-planed mantels, doors and stair rails, curly heart pine floors, and detailed plaster ceilings. The grounds hold live oaks, sycamores, camellias, azaleas and old rose bushes. During the Civil War, outbuildings were burned but the main house was spared and sheltered the elderly, women and children. The Fraser family, including Simon Fraser, a deacon, court clerk and legislator, has owned it for seven generations.","period_of_significance":"1839; 1900-","architect_builder":"Mary Jane Bacon (built for)","architectural_style":"Plantation Plain","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a private residence; condition marked excellent, with a rear shed room and ell added in 1979.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.493809-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/85000848.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000848/d8ced57367-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000848/d8ced57367-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bacon-Fraser_house_Hinesville_GA_USA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bacon-Fraser_house_Hinesville_GA_USA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208786","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon-Fraser_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16163451"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/liberty-county/bacon-fraser-house-85000848/"}
