It is also tied to prominent Winder citizens and to successive uses as a doctor's home and office, a hotel and a family residence.","narrative":"Built in 1903 on Candler Street in Winder, this two-and-one-half-story brick house combines Neoclassical and late-Victorian features. Local builder and one-time mayor Hillman Jackson constructed it for his friend Dr. Charles Almond, who lived and practiced medicine there from 1904 to 1910. A two-story portico with Corinthian columns, a denticulated cornice, pedimented gables and classical mantels give a Neoclassical impression, while unpainted red brick, segmental-arched openings and an asymmetrical roof and corner bay reflect Victorian tastes. The first-floor doctor's office had its own entrance from the porch. The house later served as the Colonial Hotel in 1912-1913 and, from 1918, as the residence of Sunnie Jackson Johns and her husband George A. Johns, a lawyer, legislator and judge. It stayed in the Johns family until 1983 and has since been renovated as bank offices. It was recognized for its architecture and its links to Winder's prominent citizens.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1903","architect_builder":"Hillman Jackson, builder","architectural_style":"Late-Victorian and Neoclassical","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Recently renovated to serve as offices for a local bank; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.581768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/85000847.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000847/ec34678d9d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000847/ec34678d9d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"ATLBrysco","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jackson-Johns_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">ATLBrysco</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jackson-Johns_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86000799","name":"Athens-Candler-Church Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/athens-candler-church-street-historic-district-86000799/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206917","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134079675"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/barrow-county/jackson-johns-house-85000847/"}
