Keeler Avenue in the Irving Park neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side, built about 1871. The builder and architect are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, well-preserved example of Italianate residential architecture in Illinois. It combines the symmetrical cupola type with the irregular ell-shaped plan, which is unusual in the state. Its later Eastlake and Colonial Revival changes reflect shifting late nineteenth century taste. It is also described as the last dwelling from Irving Park's first period of development to survive unchanged.","narrative":"Set back on a large city lot in Chicago's Irving Park neighborhood, this two-story frame house dates from about 1871 and follows the Italianate style. Clapboard siding, a high brick basement, bracketed eaves, segmentally arched window hoods and a square cupola define its appearance. Its plan is unusual because it joins a symmetrical front with a cupola to an ell-shaped layout normally found without one. Later changes include an Eastlake-style dining room remodelled in the 1880s and a Colonial Revival porch and living room fireplace added around 1900. Original balusters, newel post, sliding doors with graining and nineteenth century hardware survive inside. The builder and first owners are uncertain, though Irving Park developer John Wheeler may have built it. Christian Ropp's family lived there from the early 1890s until 1943, followed by the Grabill family until 1977. Listing recognizes it as a well-preserved Italianate house and the last unchanged dwelling from Irving Park's first development period.","period_of_significance":"c. 1871","architect_builder":"Builder/architect unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate (with Eastlake dining room remodelling and Colonial Revival porch and fireplace)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, private residence; described as admirably preserved and almost unchanged in the eighty years since its historic remodellings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.292608-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/8920/28892020/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/85000840.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000840/9e3af59d61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000840/9e3af59d61-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Thshriver","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ropp-Grabill_House_3.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Thshriver</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ropp-Grabill_House_3.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892020","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ropp-Grabill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85797846"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/ropp-grabill-house-85000840/"}
