It was Ohio Wesleyan's first stadium and reflects the growing emphasis on organized athletics at the university. It is also a good early example of stadium construction in Classical Revival style.","narrative":"Selby Field is a concrete stadium at the eastern end of the Ohio Wesleyan University campus in Delaware, Ohio, set close to Henry Street. Completed in 1929, it was Ohio Wesleyan's first stadium, built as growing interest in organized athletics outgrew the older Edwards Field near Edwards Gymnasium. The sons of Portsmouth shoe manufacturer George D. Selby paid for it as a memorial to their father. The east and west stands are nearly identical, with smooth concrete walls, round-arched window bays grouped in sections of three, projecting pilasters that hold flagstaffs, and medallions above the windows. Together the stands seated about 9,100 spectators and contained shower, trainer and team rooms. A low concrete fence surrounds the track and playing field. Space beneath the stands became dormitory rooms in 1946. The field is listed for its Classical Revival design and its role in the growth of collegiate athletics at the university, and it remains the school's main athletic facility.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is rated fair inside and outside. The stadium continues to serve as the university's primary athletic facility, and space beneath the stands has been used as dormitory space since 1946.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.705133-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85000635.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000635/bfa75cd008-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000635/bfa75cd008-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Selby_Field_entrance_and_side.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Selby_Field_entrance_and_side.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984755","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selby_Stadium","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7447557"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/delaware-county/selby-field-85000635/"}
