It shows Neoclassical-influenced detailing in its brick pilasters and cornice. It was erected after the worst fire in the city's history destroyed an entire downtown block, and it is one of the largest and finest commercial buildings in Ravenna.","narrative":"Riddle Block #9 is a four-story commercial building at 113-115 W. Main Street, on the northwest corner of Main and Chestnut streets in downtown Ravenna. Built in 1911 of hard yellow brick with thin joints and minimal terra cotta trim, it has brick pilasters between bays that correspond to the storefronts below, and a massive brick cornice with small attic windows. A two-story central light well with balustrades sits on top. The ground floor holds shops, the second floor offices, and the upper two floors apartments. H.W. Riddle, a prominent local merchant, built it soon after a fire on March 5, 1911 destroyed the wood frame commercial buildings on the site and threatened the whole downtown. The apartments were partly meant to house Italian immigrant workers from his carriage factory. The building is valued as an example of early twentieth century mixed-use architecture with Neoclassical detailing, and it remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1911","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition inside and out; storefronts altered; original commercial, office and apartment use continues.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.496433-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/85000625.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000625/a24e5d98a4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000625/a24e5d98a4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"JonRidinger","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riddle_Block_No_9.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JonRidinger</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riddle_Block_No_9.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985997","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138654237"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/portage-county/riddle-block-9-85000625/"}
