It keeps nearly all its original exterior and interior features, including the steep slate gable, scroll-sawn bargeboards and an original wrought-iron fence. It also has ties to Alfred Dunk, a prominent Binghamton businessman.","narrative":"Built around 1853-1854 at 4 Pine Street in downtown Binghamton, this two-story wood frame house on a stone basement is an urban version of the Gothic cottage popularized by Alexander Jackson Davis and Andrew Jackson Downing. Its steeply pitched, slate-covered gable carries scroll-sawn bargeboards, a finial and pendant, and the front porch retains its carved wooden detail and an ogival arch. Windows have label moldings, and an original wrought-iron fence runs along the sidewalk. Composition shingles added about 1940 cover the original vertical plank siding, which remains underneath. Inside, the house keeps its layout, four-panel doors, a cherry-railed staircase, nineteenth-century bathroom fittings and a painted slate mantelpiece of about 1875. Russel Taylor appears to have built the house; Alfred Dunk, an iron works partner, city assessor and developer of the Dunk building, bought it in 1855. The house is valued as a rare, well-preserved example of Carpenter Gothic design fitted to a narrow city lot.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Carpenter Gothic / Gothic Revival cottage","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition; exterior sheathed in composition shingles c. 1940 over original vertical plank siding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.361853-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/85000593.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000593/f9f0790c10-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000593/f9f0790c10-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jack Boucher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alfred_Dunk_House,_4_Pine_Street,_Binghamton_(Broome_County,_New_York).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Boucher</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alfred_Dunk_House,_4_Pine_Street,_Binghamton_(Broome_County,_New_York).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316563","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Dunk_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4722567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/broome-county/dunk-alfred-house-85000593/"}
