It is tied to Hickory's religious and social life in the 20th century and to many prominent local families and Presbyterian leaders. The congregation, founded in 1873, stayed downtown as other churches moved outward.","narrative":"First Presbyterian Church occupies a corner lot beside downtown Hickory. The granite sanctuary was built in 1905-1906 from designs by the Bowman Brothers of Knoxville, Tennessee, with Killiam and Whitener as contractors. Plans first called for brick, but the building committee chose granite in Belgian block cut. Its rough stonework, steep roofs, unequal corner towers and round-arched stained glass windows make it the county's best example of Romanesque Revival. The exterior is virtually unaltered, while the interior was remodeled in 1949. A three-story granite education building followed in 1928, and a modern two-story one in 1957. The 1908 manse, an American Foursquare house, still stands to the west. The congregation began in 1873 as a fifteen-member mission and grew with the town. It remained downtown while other churches moved outward, and it has hosted civic and social groups. Its members have included several of Hickory's prominent families.","period_of_significance":"1905/06, 1949","architect_builder":"Bowman Brothers, Architects; Killiam & Whitener, Contractors; Henry Ervin Gaines, 1949 remodeling","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Occupied and in religious use; the former manse's upper floor houses student pastors and its ground floor is used for youth activities.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.665771-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7174/47717449/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85000585.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000585/8f4b09d271-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000585/8f4b09d271-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tylerg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church,_Hickory_North_Carolina.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tylerg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church,_Hickory_North_Carolina.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86003357","name":"Claremont High School Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/claremont-high-school-historic-district-86003357/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717449","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_(Hickory,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453586"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/catawba-county/first-presbyterian-church-85000585/"}
