It was also one of the county's most progressive high schools and is the oldest school building still in use there. It was the county's first accredited high school and a leader in vocational education, including the founding of the Future Farmers of Virginia.","narrative":"Weyers Cave School is a brick school on Route 276 in Augusta County, Virginia. Its original core, built in 1916-17, has a central passage, a double-pile plan, an octagonal belfry and a wooden portico with Doric columns. In 1923-24 a four-room-and-passage block was added to the south, doubling the classrooms to eight on the first floor and giving the building its present form. A gymnasium/auditorium and a cannery building followed in the 1930s. The school was converted to an elementary school in 1962 and remains in use, making it the oldest school building still in service in the county. It represents the larger brick buildings that replaced small frame schoolhouses during consolidation in the 1910s. It was also the county's first accredited high school. Its Smith-Hughes agriculture program led students under E. B. Craun to organize the Future Farmers of Virginia in 1927, which grew into the Future Farmers of America. It also introduced home economics classes in 1918.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, and in use as an elementary school; it has served as an elementary school since 1962.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.487489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/6785/41678570/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85000398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000398/a1aa0524c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000398/a1aa0524c1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weyers_Cave_School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weyers_Cave_School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678570","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weyers_Cave_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713522"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/augusta-county/weyers-cave-school-85000398/"}
