The first room dates to about 1875 and the second was added by 1890.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the least altered and best preserved of Augusta County's small rural schools. It shows the progression from a one-room free school to a two-room graded school. Its largely unpainted original interior is described as the best preserved of the surviving one- and two-room schools.","narrative":"West View Schoolhouse is a small frame school near Weyers Cave in Augusta County, Virginia, built in two stages. The southern room went up around 1875, after the county School Board bought the land in November 1874. A longer northern room was added by about 1890, giving the building two classrooms. Local recollection holds that the south room served grades one through three and the north room grades four through seven. The building has two gable entrances with transom lights, a limestone foundation under the older room, and a pent-roof porch over a paired entry. Inside, wide unpainted horizontal boards cover the walls and ceilings, with painted blackboard strips, wooden shelves and an attic ladder still in place. The nomination ranks it among the best preserved of the county's small rural schools. Locally the school was called Cross Roads, after its crossroads setting. The county closed it in 1915 when a consolidated school opened in Weyers Cave, and sold it in 1929. It is now used for storage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Now used for storage; the form describes the building as well maintained and in good condition (the cover lists condition as fair and unaltered).","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.741088-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/6785/41678592/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85000397.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000397/a2d3d3db5d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000397/a2d3d3db5d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_View_Schoolhouse_site.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_View_Schoolhouse_site.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678592","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_View_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713513"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/augusta-county/west-view-schoolhouse-85000397/"}
