Meridian, Augusta County, Virginia, on a one-acre tract with its school yard.","why_significant":"It is described as one of the best preserved of the many one-room frame schoolhouses built across Augusta County in the late 19th century. After its later addition was removed, it became the only nominated schoolhouse in the county thematic group to keep its original one-room rectangular form. Its original location, setting and largely intact interior show the vernacular character of these utilitarian public schools.","narrative":"Built soon after the school trustees bought a one-acre tract in October 1885, this small frame schoolhouse at Mt. Meridian follows the familiar one-room plan common in Augusta County in the late nineteenth century. It rests on a stone foundation and has a gable-end entrance, two-bay side walls with 6/6 sash windows, a central stove flue and a metal roof. By 1890 a second room had been added at the east end, but that addition was later removed, returning the building to its original form. Inside, horizontal board sheathing, Greek architrave door and window frames and later board partitions survive, and no plumbing was ever installed; a cistern remains outside. The school closed in 1908 and was sold in 1909, then rented as a dwelling in the 1930s and 1940s. It is valued as the only school in its thematic group that keeps its original one-room form, in its original setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and in fair condition; it was rented as a dwelling in the 1930s and 1940s and has never been modernized.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.026149-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/84/6785/41678584/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85000390.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000390/29bdb93a8c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000390/29bdb93a8c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mt._Meridian_Schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mt._Meridian_Schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678584","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mt._Meridian_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712926"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/augusta-county/mt-meridian-schoolhouse-85000390/"}
