It has a simple gable-end form, a single door in the east end, and three nine-over-six windows along each side wall. The brick walls use irregular American bond with a Flemish variant, and a gable-end chimney supplied heat. A December 1830 deed describes a brick building recently erected under three trustees for use as a neighborhood school and for religious meetings. The Thompson family built it as a private school; the county later bought it and ran it as a free school until the early twentieth century, when it was consolidated into a two-room school called Swanson. It later became a dwelling, and a frame ell was added. It is valued as the county's only surviving brick one-room school, its oldest documented schoolhouse, and one of few private ones.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, in fair condition and altered; after closing as a school it was remodeled into a dwelling and a frame ell was added.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.072906-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/6785/41678597/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/85000386.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000386/336e454ccc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000386/336e454ccc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glebe_Schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glebe_Schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678597","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glebe_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712364"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/augusta-county/glebe-schoolhouse-85000386/"}
