It also shows the shift from a one-room log coastal cottage to a larger two-story center-hall dwelling. The log section is possibly the earliest surviving log structure in the county.","narrative":"Near Stedman in eastern Cumberland County, this farmhouse was built in two stages. The earlier part is a one-story log coastal cottage dating from roughly 1790 to 1815, with a single room dominated by a Georgian mantel with a segmental arch, paneled frieze and gougework trim. About 1845 a five-bay, two-story Federal/Greek Revival house with a central hall was added against it. A former slave house was later moved against the rear to serve as a kitchen and dining room. Outbuildings include a rare dairy raised on tall legs and a small slave kitchen. The property was bought in 1806 by Thomas Maxwell, Jr., and passed to his son Daniel and then to Daniel's son Alexander, who probably enlarged it. Members of the Highland Scot Maxwell family have lived there for over 150 years as farmers, cattlemen and community leaders. The house is valued as a typical large antebellum farmhouse and as possibly the county's earliest surviving log structure.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian interior woodwork in a coastal cottage log section; transitional Federal/Greek Revival two-story section","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence by a Maxwell descendant; still associated with farmland.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.062873-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7197/47719792/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/85000380.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000380/f054883511-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000380/f054883511-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Alex429842","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maxwellhouse1790.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex429842</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maxwellhouse1790.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719792","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell_House_(Stedman,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18217052"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cumberland-county/maxwell-house-85000380/"}
