It also shows the local practice of moving and enlarging houses, and it is tied to builder Marcus P. Munyan and cotton businessman Jackson Roffe Routt. The site is also considered worthy of archeological investigation.","narrative":"This large Victorian residence on a low rise at the end of Chestnut Street in Chappell Hill began as a small four-room cedar cottage, probably built in the 1850s by local architect and builder Marcus P. Munyan. After J. R. Routt bought it in 1898, the cottage was moved to the rear of the lot and made part of a larger house. Builder J. W. Heartfield added a dining room, living room, wide central hall, two bedrooms and porches by about 1900. Its south front has two projecting bays, an encircling porch with turned posts, scroll brackets and spindlework, and a gable with a sunburst pattern. Inside are ornate mantels, wainscoting, pocket doors and stained glass. The house is valued as the town's leading example of a late Victorian house with an encircling gingerbread porch, as an example of a home that grew in stages, and for its link to Routt, a cotton warehouse operator and county commissioner. The property may also hold archeological evidence of early outbuildings and Munyan's lumberyard.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Marcus P. Munyan (original house); J. W.
