It was built by Daniel Anthony, an early contributor to Adams' industrial development and a member of a Quaker family among the town's original settlers. It is also the birthplace and childhood home of Susan B. Anthony, and the only building in Massachusetts associated with her life.","narrative":"Built in 1817 at Bowens Corner in Adams, Massachusetts, this rectangular, five-bay Federal-style house has a center entry, a shallow gable roof, twin interior chimneys and a small rear ell. Daniel Anthony built it shortly before his marriage to Lucy Read, on land offered by her father. Anthony came from a Quaker family among the early settlers of Adams. He taught at a local school, helped establish the Adams Academy in 1825, and with his brother built the Pump Log Mill in 1822. Susan B. Anthony, later a leader of the women's suffrage movement, was born in the house on February 15, 1820, and lived there until the family moved to New York in 1827. It is the only Massachusetts building associated with her life. The house stayed in the family until 1895. A Quaker descendants' group ran it as a museum from 1926 to 1949. Original woodwork and mantels remain, though doors, windows and the porch have been altered.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Daniel Anthony","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a private residence; operated as a small museum from 1926 to 1949.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.251301-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7942/63794254/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/85000021.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000021/d41fea1262-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/85000021/d41fea1262-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsMA_SBAnthonyBirthplace.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsMA_SBAnthonyBirthplace.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794254","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_B._Anthony_Birthplace_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4772743"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/anthony-house-85000021/"}
