Congress appropriated $30,000 in 1873 for a light at or near Thirty Mile Point to guide ships bound for the Welland Canal. Ground was broken in April 1875, and the grey limestone tower and attached dwelling were finished in January 1876. A flashing white light of the third order first shone on 27 April 1876. The 61-foot tower rises from the north face of a two-story Stick-Style keepers' dwelling that housed the keeper and an assistant. The dwelling was partly remodeled in 1934, when a new brick wing replaced the kitchen wing. Its interior is largely intact. Outbuildings include two round iron oil houses, a barn, a woodshed, a privy and a yellow brick fog-signal house from about 1935. A steel skeleton tower replaced the light in 1959. The station is valued for its role in Great Lakes shipping and as one of the oldest lighthouses of its type.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick-Style (keepers' dwelling)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Lens and lighting apparatus removed; superseded in 1959 by a steel skeleton tower; some vandalism from attempted entry; listed as deteriorating, with present use given as none.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.56691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/8913/28891389/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/84003922.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003922/c2d81bc657-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003922/c2d81bc657-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thirtymilepoint.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thirtymilepoint.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891389","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_Mile_Point_Light","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7785223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/niagara-county/thirty-mile-point-light-84003922/"}
