Carkhuff, secretary of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company from 1905 to 1943, and is part of a neighborhood of residences built for Akron rubber company officials. It is notable for its refined brickwork and restrained Adamesque detailing. It is the only known surviving Akron-area commission of Trowbridge & Ackerman.","narrative":"Built in 1917 at 1225 West Market Street in Akron, this seventeen-room brick residence was designed by the New York firm of Trowbridge & Ackerman for Stacy G. Carkhuff, longtime secretary of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. Its Georgian Revival design is restrained, with mixed garden-wall bond brickwork, raised-brick pilasters, a slate roof and limestone used sparingly at the entry vestibule. Inside, Adamesque plasterwork, a walnut-paneled drawing room, a solarium with glazed arches and a marble-floored breakfast room reflect the same careful restraint. The house stands in a neighborhood of large homes built for executives of Akron's rubber companies. It is the only known surviving Akron-area work by its architects, who earlier enlarged Harvey Firestone's residence. After Carkhuff's death his children gave the house to the Firestone Foundation, which used it for offices until 1982. It now houses professional offices, and the exterior remains unaltered.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Trowbridge & Ackerman, Architects (Alexander B.
