The complex also includes a summer kitchen, springhouse, bank barn and frame outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house is a variation on the common \"4 over 4\" rural house type, with a double-story open porch in the rear giving it five rooms over five. A review of Walnut Township and of Pickaway and Fairfield County inventories found no other structure with this feature. It is also tied to Stevenson Peters, a major township landholder from one of the county's earliest settler families, and the farm is still worked by the same family.","narrative":"Built in 1852 near Circleville, this 2½-story brick farmhouse anchors a working farm in Walnut Township, Pickaway County. Stevenson Peters, a prominent farmer and one of the township's largest landholders by 1860, acquired the land in 1851 and had the house built from bricks made on the farm. It follows the regional \"4 over 4\" plan but adds a two-story open porch at the rear, producing five rooms over five. Surveys of Walnut Township and neighboring Fairfield County found no other example of this feature. Original hardwood floors, walnut woodwork and stairway survive inside. Later changes include a metal and then asphalt roof, a larger porch, an added shed-roof wing and sandblasted brick. A summer kitchen, springhouse and bank barn complete the older farm group. The land passed through the Peters family, apart from three years in the 1920s, and remains in agricultural use today.","period_of_significance":"1852","architect_builder":"Unknown (lintel inscribed \"Built by Stevenson Peters 1852\")","architectural_style":"Midwest rural \"4 over 4\" double-pen house type (I-house related)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied by its owners and still an active farm; the house is in excellent condition but altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.639017-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/84003797.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003797/ff06962518-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003797/ff06962518-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Aesopposea","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StephensonPetersHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Aesopposea</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StephensonPetersHouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990921","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevenson_Peters_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7615528"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/peters-stevenson-house-84003797/"}
