It sits on a site of about 2.18 acres.","why_significant":"The property is significant for its association with Stonefield School, run by Nancy Burr Gordon in the house from 1915 until her death in 1954. It was also one of the original estates northwest of Charlottesville and is regarded as a good example of a Victorian country house, one of the oldest homes in the Rugby Road area.","narrative":"Stonefield is a two-story frame house on Rugby Road in Charlottesville, built in stages beginning in 1860. Schuyler T. Rhodes put up the first section, a simple board-and-batten house on a high brick basement with a large exterior brick chimney. Mason Gordon bought the property in 1869 and, between about 1880 and 1884, added a Victorian Queen Anne front section with a hip roof, a semi-octagonal bay, bracketed eaves and a spool-work porch, which masks the older house behind it. The property matters mainly for its educational history. In 1915 Gordon's daughter, Nancy Burr Gordon, moved her school to the house, where it became Stonefield School and operated until after her death in 1954. The school later merged with others, and its name survives in St. Anne's-Belfield. The house was also one of the early estates northwest of the city, before suburban growth reached the Rugby Road area.","period_of_significance":"1915-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular, Victorian (Queen Anne)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good; the house is used as residential apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.429314-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/6786/41678681/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/84003524.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003524/79da6a6b45-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003524/79da6a6b45-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stonefield_in_Charlottesville,_through_trees.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stonefield_in_Charlottesville,_through_trees.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678681","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonefield_(Charlottesville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900747"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/stonefield-84003524/"}
